Volunteers head to battle ground states

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Alabama Republican Party Chairman Bill Armistead stopped by the Mobile County Republican Party HQ for a press conference. Armistead announced a new initiative for the State Republican Party which has been labled, the Alabama Battleground Patriots .

Armistead said since they expect Mitt Romney to win the presidential election in Alabama, the State Republican Party will send volunteers to battle ground states to campaign and rally support for Gov. Mitt Romney.

He said hundreds of volunteers will travel to Charlotte, N.C.; Virginia Beach, Va.; Jacksonville, Fla.; and Dayton, Ohio.

One of the trips will depart from Baldwin County in late October.

We caught up with local Democratic Party leaders who said they have already been sending volunteers, specifically to Pensacola, to campaign for President Obama.

Rep. Napoleon Bracy said volunteers at the Democratic Headquarters in Mobile already travel to the state of Florida on a weekly basis to campaign for Obama.

He believes the Republican's "Alabama Battleground Patriots" initiative shows the party is having to put in the hours and work harder due to overwhelming support for the President.

“It's kind of panic mode because they see that their candidate is starting to lose grounds in other states,” said Rep. Bracy. “The polling numbers are true. They're not doing as we'll as they thought they should be.”

Armistead responded by saying, “We're not scared. We're just not overconfident and want to make sure we get these votes so it's a close race in all these states.”

Armistead said Alabama has been a republican state for years and is confident citizens will make the right decision. He says local volunteers are mobilizing to help this country.

“The last thing I want to happen is wake up on November 7 and say why didn't we do something besides vote here in Alabama,” he said.
