MOBILE, Alabama (WALA) - Four suspects are in custody charged with capital murder in the death of Kyser Miree. For the first time since the April 16 murder, Police Chief Tyrone Williams talked about the case that shocked an entire community.
It's been nearly four months since Kyser was shot and killed inside his home on Macy Place in the midtown community.
Police Chief Williams talked about the case during a news conference in Mobile Monday.
"These individuals, as I understand it, were riding around looking for people to rob," Chief Williams said.
Williams said random robbery was the motive for the crime.
Jamal Lang, Michael Lee, Ernest Wiggins, and Bo Taylor all are facing one capital murder charge each.
"Kyser Miree was just a victim of one of their nights of revelry, nights of robbery. It is really unfortunate that this 23-year-old young man lost his life, because these four suspects had nothing else to do," the chief said.
Chief Williams did not say what it was about the small red house that caused the four suspects to single it out.
Mary Potts lives in the neighborhood. She didn't know Miree personally, but she's thought about him a lot since the murder. She said the crime left many shaken in the quiet midtown community.
"Just to be snatched in such a senseless way is just so tragic," Potts said. "It is unnerving and if there was a reason that they chose him, but it was just so random that it does, we're just not used to that in this neighborhood."
Chief Williams agree. The crime did have a big impact on the community.
"It caused us a lot of problems on Macy Place with people being uneasy in their homes. We want people in Mobile to feel safe. They can feel safe with the detectives, and staff that we have in this police department," Chief Williams said.
It's a promise that may carry more weight for neighbors because the four suspects charged with the murder are behind bars.
Police say even though they believe they know who pulled the trigger, they're not saying because all of the suspects are facing the same charge.
