The Alabama Department of Transportation completed repair and maintenance work on the Bankhead Tunnel early Thursday morning.  It had been closed since Monday for repair and maintenance.

ALDOT crews worked around the clock to complete the work as fast as possible.  Officials had estimated it would take about ten days, but crews opened the tunnel shortly after 5 am Thursday - four days earlier than planned.

The Bankhead Tunnel is 70 years old. About 15,000 drivers travel through the tunnel every day. The cost to repair the tunnel was estimated at $150,000.
