MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - The Alabama Department of Transportation says the Bankhead Tunnel will be closed beginning Friday, March 15 from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m., through Monday, March 18 to re-install newly painted doors.

Traffic will be detoured through the Wallace Tunnel on Interstate 10.

Motorists are requested to consider using alternate routes, adjust arrival/departure times, observe work zone speed limits and other work zone signs, and use extreme caution in this area.

In the event congestion gets too heavy, the City of Mobile will be prepared to open Bankhead for a brief time in the respective direction to relieve some of the congestion.
