MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - It may seem like the big retailers are getting all the attention on Black Friday, but small businesses welcomed holiday shoppers, too.
Retailers in the Springhill area said they’ve seen an increase in shoppers, looking for sales.
“A lot of times, they go to Target and Wal-Mart first thing in the morning. But maybe being open yesterday some of these places caused them to go last night or early this morning, so we have customers earlier this year than last,” said Co-Owner of Holiday Inc. Nancy Brock.
Customers like Mary Jo Mayhall said they shop locally because of the sense of familiarity.
"They know all of our children, every one of them, even the boys until they outgrew holiday boy sizes,” said Mayhall.
Mayhall said she also enjoys the peaceful shopping environment.
“Look outside. Do you see a mass of humanity out there? No. I can walk in, and I can look and browse,” aid Mayhall.
A few doors down from Holiday Inc., Very Vintage said it has seen a steady flow of customers.
"We have been pleased with what we have seen so far today,” said Co-Owner of Very Vintage Pat Schneider.
Schneider said it’s important for local residents to remember their neighboring stores.
"We just living part of the American dream, and we need support to stay open,” said Schneider
