Bond denied for capital murder suspects

MOBILE, Alabama (WALA) - Just two days after the murders of Willie Sullivan and his grandson, two of the suspects accused of the brutal killings had their first day in court.

"The judge is holding them with no bond based on the fact that it's a capital case," said Mobile County District Attorney Ashley Rich.

Tavares Jones and Ricky Turner were both scheduled to appear before Judge Charles McKnight, but Turner was the only one physically in the courtroom.

"His attorney waived his presence in court. Just a choice he made," Rich said.

Jones has hired an attorney. Turner did not have representation but told McKnight he was going to hire someone to represent him. Many of Turner's family members were present in the courtroom. Family members of the victims did not come to the hearing.

"Because there is a law enforcement officer involved, they understand the process more than others. They understand the police are doing their job and working the investigation carefully, and they're trying to be patient and understanding," Rich said.

Willie Sullivan, Sr. was the father of a Mobile Police lieutenant, his grandson, Glenn, was the lieutenant's nephew.

Judge Charles McKnight set an arraignment for Jones and Turner next Tuesday.
