MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Hundreds gathered at the Salvation Army on Dauphin Street for a hot holiday meal on Christmas Day.
Chef Cecil Morris and his staff prepared a meal with all the fixings for 1,000 people and will be serving until 3 p.m Dec. 25.
“This isn't just, you know a boxed meal. This is home-cooked, warm meal with all the traditional food you can think of,” said Salvation Army Spokesperson, Katie Emer.
The meal included turkey, ham green beans and a tableful of desserts. The organization prides itself on offering a restaurant-style experience with VIP treatment.
“We just like to treat people like human beings. We don’t know where they come from. We don’t know where they are going when they leave here but while they are here, we give them the best quality service that we can provide,” said Chef Cecil Morris.
Morris has been cooking at the organization for nearly 20 years.
“The people that are being fed out here today... once a upon a time, I was one of those people. And so I know what it is to not have anything to eat. I know what it is to go hungry and cold and have nowhere to go,” said Morris.
