CHICKASAW, Alabama (WALA) - Chickasaw police say a man they took into custody on Monday night was found dead in his cell Tuesday afternoon.

Officers say they were alerted that the man, whose name has not been released, was not breathing. This was around 12 p.m. CPR was performed on the man until fire medics arrived. They could not get a heart rhythm, and the man was pronounced dead on the scene.

Investigators say the man did not put up a fight, and the arrest was made by only one officer. The man was put in a cell by himself and was checked on throughout the night and into the next day. No drug test was conducted, as it is not standard procedure.

Authorities say the victim was 38-years-old and a resident of Chickasaw.

The Alabama Department of Forensic Science, the Alabama Bureau of Investigation, and the Chickasaw Police Department are conducting an investigation. Officials say the cause of death appears to be of natural causes, but are waiting for official autopsy results to be released.
