CHICKASAW, Ala. (WALA) - The Chickasaw City School System had a back to school bash Friday commencing its first ever school system. It split from the Mobile County School System this year.

Parading around their school, parents, student’s faculty and staff made a commitment to their new school system.

This will be the first year students will attend classes in the city’s own school system. It officially split from Mobile County Public School System this April along With Satsuma.

Superintendent Kyle Kallhoff said he is so happy to be involved in the historic moment.

"It’s quite humbling. Chickasaw has been looking for this for some time. It’s quite humbling it really is," said Kallhoff.

Kallhoff said there will be challenges.

"The city is behind the school system, and they know this first year is going to be challenging but it doesn't matter. We’ll handle those challenges," said Kallhoff.

There is a lot excitement in the students and also long-time teachers that have spent years with other systems.

Jodi McPherson left the Mobile County Public School System to make the move to Chickasaw.

"It’s different because it's brand new school, brand new people to work with, new faces, new children," said McPherson.

With her classroom decorated, she's ready for her students.

"I can’t think of a better place to work. I've met all the faculty, and it’s just been a pleasure, so far so good," said McPherson.

The first bell will ring Monday morning.
