City acquires Saenger Theatre from Center of Living Arts

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) -  After 12 years of operating and managing the Saenger Theatre, the Center for the Living Arts will turn all responsibilities over to the City of Mobile.

"We are enthusiastic about passing the baton to the city and are confident this will make both the CLA and the Saenger stronger forces in our cultural community, enhancing the quality of life for all,” stated Board Chair Mike Rogers in a press release.

In a press release, CLA said the historic theater has lost money every year for the past decade. Organizers said after a year-long discussion, they came to the conclusion that running the theater is not longer financially viable option.

"This move allows us to focus on what we do best: building community through contemporary art," said CLA Executive Director Rober Sain.

The City of Mobile will manage the theater until it can secure a permanent management structure.

Mayor Sam Jones said two city staffers with facility management experience. Grey Cyprian and Bren Durant, will assume management responsibilities during the interim period. The city is looking for experienced management companies to take over and take the theater to the next level.

"I expect you will see people from all over make proposals,’ said Jones.

Officials plan to keep the Theatre's historic legacy alive even while in transition.

The city council is expected to vote on an enterprise fund to operate the theater until permanent management is secured.
