City council adds to advisory committee; no vote on recycling center

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Another member is appointed to the Mobile City Council's Citizen's Budget Advisory Committee while no action is taken on the Albert P. Brewer center property.

By unanimous vote, Mobile City Council members vote to appoint Page Stalcup to the Citizen's Budget and Finance Advisory Committee.

He was recommended by Council President Reggie Copeland.

Gina Gregory said the committee is made up of financial advisors, certified public accountants and people who have managed money for major corporations and will act as a panel of experts.

Gregory said this will not be a one issue committee.

"They will look at the tax issue that we have been dealing with. My goal is that they will study the finances and spending trends and look at what the deficit actually is ," said Gregory.

The committee will meet for the first time Wednesday, at 8 a.m. at the BB&T on the Service Road.

Gregory said it is open to the public.

Every council member except Jermaine Burrell has appointed a member to the committee.

Fred Richardson appointed himself. 

City council members failed to vote on the memorandum of understanding with the county concerning the old Albert P. Brewer Center.

It was demolished by the county and now it is time to pay.

"Once we closed out the project, we sent to the city the invoice for the portion they were going to pick up for demolition cost," said Mobile County Commissioner Merceria Ludgood. 

Ludgood said the city is responsible for around $70,000.

She said the land will be used for a recycling center and sports complex.

"Recycling center will be on the same site, but right now we are looking at developing a sports complex first," said Ludgood.

Council members tabled the issue.

"There were some questions about the memorandum of understanding," said Gregory.
