MOBILE, Ala. ( WALA) - Mobile Parks and Recreation said last week it’s asking teams to contribute to a fund that will be given to the family of Officer Steven Green.
Football creates camaraderie between teammates and in this case, the same goes for coaches.
“Because Steven Green coached at one time, we wanted to show our support for the family,” said Marion Shepard, Mobile Parks and Recreation.
When word spread to teams throughout the organization about Green's death, coaches answered the call.
“It wasn't a question of contributing; it was a question of when and where,” said Hillsdale Mustangs Coach, Nate Everett.
Many said Green was known as a coach who made a lasting, positive impression on his team.
"We’ve gotten quite a few positive comments from the parents whose children came in contact with him,” Shepard said
He would coach the kids on and off the field.
"A lot of times coaches end up being father figures. There are kids more afraid of the coaches then they are their parents,” Everett said.
Even after his coaching stint, Green would drop by the field. He was often standing on the sidelines. The teams will continue to play, but they said it won't be the same.
"A little sad and a little bit empty because as a coach, we relish our competition and we are going to miss him on the battlefield,” said Everett.
So far Mobile Parks and Recreation has collected about $500.00. It will continue to take donations throughout the weekend. If you’re interested in catching a ball game and making a donation click here for a schedule.
