Community marches 'to stop violence'

PRICHARD, Ala. (WALA) - Young people in Prichard took to the streets Friday evening to march against city-wide violence.

Quinn Austin-Pugh lead the’ Stand for Something or Die for Nothing’ march, which began at 4:30 p.m.

It's in memory of his friend and others killed by violence.

“Our name in this city has been tarnished, and we want to show people that we're not just a bunch of hooligans,” said Austin-Pugh.

On August 30, Kaylan Watkins, 22, was gunned down on a street corner in Prichard.

Austin-Pugh said his community is tired of erecting memorials and tributes, in memory of loved ones lost to violence.

“If people just get involved just like it is now, everything's all good,” said one supporter.

“We want to let all people know that in, Prichard it's not all bad things that are happening. We still have good things that go on,” said another woman marching.

The rally almost didn't happen after some controversy with city leaders over paperwork for the march.

However, city officials marched alongside supporters to rally other Prichard youth to the cause.
