FAIRHOPE, Ala. (WALA) - The Alabama State Fire Marshal continues to investigate a Saturday night fire in Fairhope that destroyed at least two units in one building.

Fairhope volunteer firefighters, assisted by several area fire departments, put out the blaze in about 45 minutes.

Lt. Lee Cunningham remained on scene hours after the fire was put out.

“We had about a 50-foot flame going through the roof, so it was all confined to the apartments, what you see is burned is what was burned when we got through,” said Cunningham.

Three units on the second-floor bear most of the fire damage. Adjacent units that didn’t burn sustained water damage and some smoke damage. One resident said the building was built in 2009.

“All of the families are OK, we've made contact with nine out of the 10 dwellings ... I think everybody's making arrangements and everybody's OK,’ Cunningham said.

Cunningham said a cause of the fire could be released in the next couple of days, once the fire marshal completes his investigation.
