MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - For the past 12 years, proceeds from the Panther Pride 5K have benefitted teachers’ supply needs and, after a tornado damaged the school, those needs have expanded, officials said.
This year, the 3.1 mile course, which usually winds through the school in Midtown Mobile has had to be altered as a result of the damage and will instead run through downtown when the event takes place on January 19.
Online registration is open until midnight January 17 online and will be available from 7:30-8 a.m. on race day.
Officials said last year, over 330 runners completed the event.
The Murphy High School Parent Teacher Student Association, which organizes the event, said they hope to contribute over $20,000 to the teacher’s wish list this year.
“Due to the destruction sustained Christmas day, our teachers' needs have increased,” PTSA officials said.
Those interested in contributing by being a sponsor, runner or donating can make donations and sign up online through January 17 .
