MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - A hometown boy who made it big was recognized Tuesday morning in city council.

Mobile Mayor Sam Jones declared February 5, 2013 as Captain Munnerlyn Day and handed the Murphy High School alumnae the key to the city.

The Mobile native is a cornerback for the Carolina Panthers. But it was a long road to get there. He grew up with a single parent in the projects and overcame adversity to make it to the top.

Munnerlyn said he's going to help his alma mater, Murphy, rebuild from the December tornado.

Munnerlyn said, "It's sad. Anything I can do to help. I'm gonna go talk to the coaches' league, to the principal and see, if I can help raise some money or get some money out of my own pocket. I just want my high school back up running."
