Dog River residents raise money for litter trap

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Dog River residents are close to raising enough money to purchase a litter trap for the river.

Residents say rain forces trash from nearby waterways to flood Dog River. The traps cost $125,000 a piece. Once they're installed, someone needs to clean them out and haul the trash away. Some would like to see the city help.

"It is my hope that this will work, and before that, my hope is that our citizens and visitors will stop littering. Beyond that, it is my hope that the city will start enforcing the litter laws we have in place," said Bruce Coldsmith, a Dog River resident.

The Dog River Clear Water Revival is holding a fishing tournament November 12 to help raise money for the litter trap.

Hackbarth Delivery Service presents the 2nd Annual Dog River Clearwater Revival Fishing Tournament on Saturday, November 12. All proceeds go towards DRCR's efforts to improve the water quality of Dog River.

Fish can come from anywhere in inshore Alabama waters. Hooks in at 6 a.m. and out at 2 p.m. Weigh-in will be at The River Shack on Saturday from 2:00 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. The Entry Fee is $35 for adults (includes raffle ticket and t-shirt) and $15 for kids under 12. Grand Prize raffle is a cruise from Springdale Travel.
