Dog shot in Wilmer

Terrier died from wound

WILMER, Ala. (WALA) - According to the owner of a 6 month old Jack Russell terrier, named "Case," that was shot on Easter Sunday in Wilmer, the dog has died from its injuries.

The owner also says a Mobile County Sheriff Deputy responded to the scene and took a report when the incident occurred.

UPDATE: Dr. Karl Smith DVM of the George County Veterinarian Clinic (Lucedale, MS) told Fox10 News that the Jack Russell Terrier was brought to him.

"He came in lethargic, had an entrance wound in it's left flank ... real lethargic, temperature about 103.5 F," Dr. Smith said, "We knew it'd been a gunshot."

Doctor Smith said the terrier already had an infection in it's intestines, but they worked on saving Case.

"We picked up a bullet, a pellet from a pellet gun," said Dr. Smith.

Doctor Smith said Case seemed to be doing well when they closed Monday night, but found Case dead the next morning.

A spokesperson from the Mobile County Sheriff's Office said a deputy questioned some neighbors on Sunday about the incident.

A 16 year old boy said he had thrown a rock at the terrier because it was in his yard and eating his dogs' food.

"If their intent was to get the dog off their property you can shoot a BB gun at it," said Sgt. Joe Mahoney, "Technically the dog owner is violation of having it run loose."

Mahoney says no charges will be filed in this case.
