MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - The City of Mobile brightened the lights along three major roadways, and the upgrade is expected to save the city $75,000.
A U.S. Department of Energy Grant allowed the city to buy 1,144 LED street lights. The 150-watt LED lights replaced the 250-watt high pressure sodium lights along Government Boulevard, Airport Boulevard, and Dauphin Street.
Along with saving money, the city says the lights will also increase visibility.
“Not only will we cut energy costs, but because these lights last longer, we will reduce maintenance expenses as well,” said Mayor Sam Jones. “This grant was procured by staff from our Electrical, Environmental, and Traffic Engineering departments. They have done a great job.”
The city is looking into using the savings to buy more LED lights in the future.
