SATSUMA, Ala. (WALA) - Saturday marked the 7 th year a Satsuma group has held an event designed to build unity and community among people and churches around the world.
It’s an event promoting unity, but do Kingdom Covenant Connections, the organizers of the event, think people are more unified now than they were when the first rally was held?
Songs and prayers floated through air at the annual Unity Walk and rally in Spanish Plaza Saturday afternoon.

Kingdom Covenant Connections said it has put on the event every year since 2006. The group said it’s a Christian, non-profit organization devoted to building unity.
Group founder Carrie Coats said, "We are making progress. We are making progress. This event is growing. We have people here from Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, as far as away as California calling in."
The group said it believes one way to build unity is to give back to the community.
Among the many activities going on at the rally, one was health checkups. The Mobile County Health Department brought its van to conduct free medical screenings.
Kingdom Covenant Connections said the checkups especially help people who, "may not be able to get it when they need to.”
“We ask them to come out and check everybody out, to make sure that they're getting the checkup they need," said Antwain Conner, one of the organizers.
There were also free meals and activities for children. Sunday, Kingdom Covenant Connections will hold a unity concert at Municipal Park in Mobile beginning at 2 p.m.
The group said it holds the unity walk the second weekend of September every year; they pointed out that it isn’t reactive to specific events.
Conner said, "We don't have to wait until something bad happens. We can start while everything is normal, to prevent the kind of calamities that you see that would normally call for unity in the first place."
Coats said, "Everybody is laying down their differences and saying, 'We can come together.' We can bring Him into the land.”
