MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Mobile police are investigating a deadly interstate accident, and they are calling it a terrible sequence of events.
A 75-year-old Chickasaw man was killed after he was involved in a wreck on I-65 and Government Boulevard. Police said Buster Brown Streetmen's car collided with another. But that accident is not what killed him. They said he was hit by a car while he was crossing the interstate.
They believe Streetmen wanted to check on the condition of the other driver involved in the accident. Streetman died on the scene. The other driver was not injured.
The accident happened in the southbound lanes of Interstate 65 between the Airport Boulevard and Government Street exits.
Streetman was known as a good and helpful neighbor.
"He was always asking me if there was anything he could do to help me you know,” said longtime neighbor Jackie Reddick
When Reddick learned her neighbor of nearly 20 years wouldn't be coming home, she was heartbroken.
"When I heard it this morning, I was in utter shock I could not believe it. Robert my neighbor over there is the one that came and told me and it really hurt me you know? To know that he had passed away,” said Reddick.
Reddick said she will mostly miss her daily chats at the fence with her good friend.
"I don't know what the boys are going to do about his house but whoever comes in there sure will not compare to who Buster was. In fact I don't know who will come in but I hope they'll be as good as he was,” said Reddick.
Interstate accidents are among the most dangerous for drivers. Police said use your best judgment if you ever check on a crash victim. Officials said no charges are expected.
