Father of manslaughter victim: Security should have stepped in

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - The father of Raymond Boykin spoke to FOX10 about justice for his son.

The Mobile Police Department said when 29-year-old Raymond Boykin stepped in to break up a fight between two females he was struck in the head and killed by Jeremy McDaniels.

"Our suspect then punched our victim in the head with his fist, knocking him unconscious and he later died from those injuries,” said Cpl. Chris Levy with Mobile Police.

McDaniels is now charged with manslaughter.

Authorities told FOX10 News officers were working security outside Club Casino when they heard of the fight inside.

Mike Boykin, the victim's father, said his son's death could have been prevented if the nightclub's security stepped in, rather than his son.

"This stuff goes on every day in every city. Until law enforcement starts really getting strict in things like that, it's going to continue," said Boykin.

Boykin has two children and a wife.

"We got to see him yesterday for the first time. We got to the funeral home and we got to take his clothes and all to him. I just said a long prayer. For the rest of the family, it's been really hard," said Boykin.

A fund at Century Bank has been set up to help Boykin's family cover expenses. The account is under Boykin's wife's name, Rachel Braden.

Funeral services will be held from the chapel of Serenity Funeral Home on Thursday, November 1 at 2 p.m. Visitation from 11 a.m. until service time.

A benefit is scheduled November 23 at Soul Kitchen in downtown Mobile.
