MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - A lot of parents and children were all giddy on Monday for the first day of school in Mobile County and surrounding areas.
Changes to state law meant that school started a little late this year. Children enjoyed a slightly longer summer but, now, that has come to an end.
So, August 20, it was the start of all things new: a new week, new clothes and a new school year.
As 7:40 a.m. approached at Fonde Elementary, parents and students filed in. Lauren, a first-grader said her favorite subject in school is ‘learning.’
Other students prioritized differently. Justin, another first grader, said, “We might go outside and play."
The first day of school offers a welcome relief for parents. A father of two students said, "I'm glad this started, I can have a little free time to myself."
A mother said, "[This means] more mommy time. From 8 'o clock to 2 'o clock its mommy time." And she'll be able to enjoy that mommy time for 180 school days until the summer returns again.
A school system spokesperson said things ran smoothly and there were no reported problems on Monday morning.
A spokesperson for Mobile County Public Schools said if there are registration issues, or if a student is registering late, parents should call Student Services at (251) 221-4245.
