For now, Mardi Gras to roll as planned in Mobile

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - The Mardi Gras season will finish up strong on Fat Tuesday with several parades scheduled to roll, but how will the wet weather affect your plans?

As of Monday night, there have been no changes to Mobile's Mardi Gras schedule, but officials said but it’s still a possibility.

Fat Tuesday is of course the busiest day and downtown Mobile will be packed. That has police monitoring the situation with public safety in mind.

So far, Mother Nature has had a limited impact on Mardi Gras. Thousands turned out to watch the Infant Mystics roll through downtown Mobile on Monday even in soggy conditions.

Many are hoping the same will happen on Fat Tuesday. Six parades are scheduled, and the forecast is calling for more rain.

Corporal Chris Levy with Mobile Police said the department is monitoring the weather and will ultimately make the call.

"Everything is scheduled to go as planned as long as it’s safe enough for the people in the parade, the spectators and the officers working the route,” said Levy.

Rain won’t necessarily shut down the fun, but Levy said it does make it challenging.

"You have guys on motorcycles, people on horses. You have people you are trying to get in and out of downtown and you just have to make the right decision,” said Levy.

Levy said that decision will be made well in advance.

"Safety is key here, and we can determine it’s not safe and key things like tornados, lightening flash floods or if the organization does not want to run. Those are the things that would either change cancel, alter a parade,” said Levy.
