GED testing to change in 2014

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Students who are just a few points shy of getting their GED could find themselves starting over if they don't complete the program before new changes take effect in 2014.

Starting in January, a new version of the test will be given nationwide; it will be administered online. Instead of costing $50 the exam course could jump to $150. 

Patricia Williams with the GED program at Bishop State Community College also said any credits acquired prior to the change will be erased.

Williams said Tuesday they've been trying to get the word out about the pending changes.  

The GED Testing Service said in a statement on their website that they hope to evolve the test from "an endpoint." The statement said they hope it can become “a springboard for more education, training, and better-paying jobs.”

“The new assessment will continue to provide adults the opportunity to earn a high school credential, but it goes further by measuring career- and college- readiness skills that are the focus of today’s curriculum and tomorrow’s success,” the statement says.
