Gildersleeve officially charged with attempted murder

Also faces burglary charge for unlawful entry

MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. (WALA) - The man accused of shooting former Alabama football star Antwan Odom was officially charged with attempted murder and a new charge of first degree burglary Tuesday.

Tony Gildersleeve will remain in Metro Jail until his bond hearing Wednesday morning.

Investigators say Gildersleeve unlawfully entered Antwan Odom's home in Irvington early Monday morning and fired a shotgun at the athlete who was in bed.

"It's my understanding the first shot went into the headboard and into the wall above the bed, and the second shot grazed his leg," Lori Myles said.

Myles with the Mobile County Sheriff's Office said the shooting appeared to be the result of a love-triangle involving friends.

The friendship between the two men is older than Odom's college and NFL career. It goes back to high school where they both played football at Alma Bryant.

Another high school friend, Tina Davis was with Odom. The sheriff's office says Davis was Gildersleeve's girlfriend. She was not hurt by the gunfire.

Myles said a shotgun shoots a broader field than a handgun.

"Mr. Odom was very lucky that he was not hurt any worse than he was," she said.

Some might say the fact that Odom was not seriously hurt is evidence Gildersleeve was not trying to kill him, but Myles said that's not how investigators see it.

"To us, as the deputies on the scene, it was an attempted murder charge," she said.

What happens next with the charges and the long-standing friendship between the men will now play out in court.

The bond hearing is set for 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.
