MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Mobile County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a man who they say was driving down a busy interstate with a pair of goats in the trunk of his car.

Elijah Aikins, 29, was arrested and charged with animal cruelty on Monday.

Deputies said the discovery was made during a routine traffic stop along Highway 98.

Deputies said Aikins told them he was on his way to Lucedale, Miss. to pick up some livestock; so officers sent him on his way.

According to deputies, Aikins was pulled over again for driving too close to another vehicle. Officials told FOX10 the Aikins was driving back to Mobile along the same highway.

The responding officer asked where his livestock was to which Aikins responded by opening the trunk of his car to show them.

“Two goats in the trunk,” said MCSO spokeswoman Lori Myles. “They were fine. Deputies got them out and got them water and air and all of that.”

Aikins was released on bond and is expected back in court on January 28.
