MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Alabama Governor Robert Bentley is asking state legislators to increase funding and expand voluntary Pre-Kindergarten programs in the state.

Under his proposal, the governor said, local voluntary Pre-K programs may apply for grants, but will be required to meet certain criteria.

The governor also wants them to produce what he calls “real results.” Bentley said it’s important that the achievement gap is closed, and that children and schools are given every chance to succeed.

He said there are schools in Alabama that are chronically failing, and the state needs to address and turn them around.
