MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - A new survey shows that two out of three Moms struggle with a picky eater. And, if you have a picky eater, you know how hard it is.
Moms of picky eaters worry about their kids are getting all the nutrition they need.
Rallie McAllister is a mom of three boys and a pediatrician. She has a picky eater in her house, so she knows first-hand that this is one of the most challenging things moms face. But, it's also one of the most important.
Good nutrition is key to a child’s development. McAllister said no matter what, moms need to keep trying.
"It's ok if a child refuses it that one time. You don't want to make a big deal out of it. Don't get into a food fight, but try again; and try a different way. Say you put out raw broccoli, and your picky eater doesn't want to eat it; maybe try it steamed. Maybe it's a texture thing, or maybe try it in a casserole. And remember, it can take up to 15 times of exposure to that particular food before a child will come to love it and eat it. So, don't give up,” McAllister said.
McAllister also said it’s important to set an example by eating what you want them to eat, and remember healthy eating habits take time.
“It might take as many as 15 tries to get our kids interested in eating some of those healthy foods. One other trick to try: let them play with healthy finger foods. Experts say when kids get to play with the foods, they're more likely to eat them. Try different forms and shapes of foods. You can break out cookie cutters or cut the veggies into fun shapes. Remember, meal time should be fun and it should be relaxing for your kids,” McAllister said.
