Hundreds welcome Honor Flight return

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - More than 100 local World War II veterans touched down at Mobile Regional airport Wednesday night, after spending the day in Washington, DC.

Honor Flight VIII veterans arrived a little later than expected, around 9 p.m.

Nevertheless, hundreds more greeted the local heroes during a welcome home ceremony in the airport lobby.

Many supporters brought American Flags, Posters, and signs.

Some Honor Flight veterans said all the support was almost overwhelming.

“Everybody’s appreciative of what we’ve done. They understand they’re free because of people like us,” said local WWII Vet Speedy Warren.  

““It just thrills you. You’re almost speechless to tell you or say the things that you feel,” said another Honor Flight Veteran Rudolph Rolison.

Organizers said this was the largest honor flight yet.

Many veterans said they felt truly blessed to be a part of the experience, and also humbled by the opportunity and support.
