Insurance payout increase on the table

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Word is spreading around the city of Mobile about a vote expected to take place at Tuesday's city council meeting.

"We have been told about a closed door meeting between some city council members and the mayor of Mobile that happened yesterday," said John Young.

Young is a police officer with the city of Mobile who spoke with FOX10 exclusively while off-duty. He said it was decided in the meeting that city employees insurance payout would increase by 100%.

The police officer said he has not received a raise in six years. He also said he was told this increase was going to happen with or without the renewal of the penny sales tax increase proposed by Mobile Mayor Sam Jones.

Young says it seems strange that the vote decision was made on Thursday, with the council meeting set just days after, on Oct. 2.

"There's no public discussion? I think they were hoping no one would find out ‘till Monday, a day before the vote is to take place," Young said.

Young said doubling how much city workers pay for health insurance is not fair and that this would also affect retirees with the city. He said, if this vote passes, many retirees would have to pay more than $500 a month for insurance.
