MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. (WALA) - The Mobile County Probate Court's website said Jerry Carl had about 35,000 votes, and Terrance Burrell has around 14,000 in the county commission district three race, with 100 percent of precincts reporting.
Carl and his supporters met at his West Mobile headquarters Tuesday night to celebrate a long and arduous campaign.
FOX10 News fed Carl unofficial results throughout the night. By 8:30 p. m. 39 precincts reported Carl leading with around 29,000 votes to Burrell's 11,000.
"Well we're excited, we're looking at about 72 percent so far. It's looking pretty comfortable, but we don't want to declare anybody a winner or loser until the last minute, which may be late tonight or even tomorrow," said Jerry Carl.
A crowd that included Mobile city council member Gina Gregory and Mobile County Sheriff Sam Cochran erupted with applause.
"It started 24 months ago -- the ups and downs and roller coasters, but tonight's either the last night or a new beginning, so we're excited," said Carl with his wife Tina at his side.
Carl addressed the crowd and became emotional.
"God told me to dig a hole in Mobile County, this is we where make a stand, we change things," said Carl in an impromptu speech to his supporters.
He said there are people in Mobile County with a lot of good ideas that have yet to see the light of day, he wants to change that.
Carl mentioned creating job training for young adults and working hand in hand with law enforcement and the district attorney.
"I have a to go to work, I have a lot of things I want to get accomplished I understand the swearing in will be on the 14th, so there's not much time between now and then," said Carl.
He joked that he'll know if he won or lost on Wednesday morning when all the media call him asking for a quote.
