Officer involved crash could lead to civil suit

CHICKASAW, Ala. (WALA) - The Citrin Law Firm said it will soon file a civil law suit against the City of Chickasaw concerning an officer-involved car crash.

Authorities said two officers were responding to a burglary call last week when they collided with a car carrying a woman and her two kids inside.

Chickasaw police said early reports show the sirens were on at the time of the wreck.

Since witnesses accounts differ from those of the CPD, Russ Copeland said he is going to investigate those claims.

"No lights, no sirens there was a stop sign (the officer) ran right through it and right into this family," said Cheryl Turner.

Copeland said if the witness accounts prove to be true, he believes someone should be held accountable.

"You have lights. You have sirens When you are going to blow through a stop sign at an intersection, you need to use those things," said Copeland.

Copeland said dash cam video would answer some questions, and he plans on viewing it. He said this case is about protecting the roads and the people driving on them.

"Everybody is held accountable, and there is protocol put in place to protect everybody; not just the police officers but the citizens,' said Copeland.

 Chickasaw City Attorney Jay Minus declined to comment when asked about the law firm's intentions.
