MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - The main Mobile County License Commissions office will reopen Thursday, after being closed this week.
Taxpayers were originally told the building would remain closed this week due renovations. But now, License Commissioner Kim Hastie said the renovations have been postponed.
"The biggest reason that we are doing renovations for the floors right now is because they are cracking. They are really slick; so if it rains like yesterday and you walk in from outside, we've had several incidences where we've had employees fall. And we've had a couple tax payers fall as well,” said Hastie.
Due to budget constraints, the license commission building is already closed every Wednesday.
So when some people showed up hoping to take care of business Tuesday, they left irritated.
“I think it's ridiculous actually. It's causing people to have difficult times, having to go clear across town,” said Ashley Williams.
Hastie offered her apologies to taxpayers and said the renovations are for their safety.
Now since the doors are opening again soon without the renovations, Hastie said a security guard will help people inside when it’s slippery and rugs will cover the entryway area when it rains.
Hastie said the renovation will cost about $42,000 and will be paid through the county commission budget. No word on when the renovations will take place.
The office will re-open Thursday and Friday this week and will have the same schedule next week due to the holidays.
