One Life-Flighted after bus accident

MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. (WALA) - On Monday, March 11, a school field trip ended in a crash when a bus collided with a car.

It was a frightening scene at the intersection of Fowl River Road and Dauphin Island Parkway in Bellfountaine.

The remnants of the accident that happened around 2:30 p.m. included an overturned bus and a car wrapped around a power pole.

"I’ve never seen anything like this," said witness Meghan Lindsey.

State Trooper Sgt. Joe Piggot said a gold infinity ran a stop sign colliding with a passenger bus carrying around 10 children and five adults.

Piggot said the driver of the car is area resident Valerie Hall.

Lindsey and other onlookers rushed to help including two men Lindsey describes as angels.

"They ripped the windows and everybody is just pulling kids out like you would sandbags,” Lindsey said.

The children are students at Riverhill School in Florence.

The school’s principal Mary Jane Fowler said they got to Dauphin Island on Sunday and were headed to dinner on the causeway when the accident happened. Thankfully, she said they are all ok.

"It’s wonderful when you get to hear their voices talking back to us, and we know that they are on the other end of the line and able to talk," Fowler said.

Fowler said most of those onboard the bus were taken to various hospitals in Mobile and treated for minor injuries.

Piggot said the driver of the car was Life-Flighted to USA Medical Center. At last check on Monday night, the driver  was in critical condition.
