MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Members of the Alabama 3 Disaster Medical Assistance Team (AL-3 DMAT), deployed to New Jersey and New York in response to Hurricane Sandy.

Members of the local emergency reponse team said they are operating at locations in both states since their Oct. 30 departure.

The group part of the US Department of Health and Human Services National Disaster Medical System (NDMS) created to help respond to natural or manmade disasters.

DMAT Teams are field hospitals, they compared their duties to the popular TV show MASH.  A team is typically comprised of all levels of medical personnel to include doctors, nurses, paramedics and other support personnel.
