Locals political headquarters host debate viewing parties

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Viewers across the country are expected to watch the first debate between President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney in Denver on Wednesday.

Both local campaign headquarters have planned watch parties and there are several others in the area.

The Democratic Party Headquarters in Mobile is gearing up for Wednesday's debate.

Come sundown, the building on Dauphin Street should be packed with people ready for the showdown between Obama and his challenger, Romney.

The local chairman of the Democratic party, State Representative Napoleon Bracy, said this is the president's time to shine.

"I support Obama because he is for the working family. I am a working class man and he's for our family," said Bracy.

Bracy expects the economy, healthcare and education to take center stage for the debate.

"Pell grants have doubled under this administration. He supports healthcare for all. Healthcare is not a privilege, it is something that everybody should have, not only the fortunate," said Representative Bracy.

The Republican Party Headquarters on Airport Blvd. also buzzed with activity on Wednesday. Governor Romney’s supporters filed in for bumper stickers, yard signs and buttons.

Officer Manager Andrea Fussell said she expects the debate to be a success for Romney, a chance for him to show his compassion for the nation.

"He is a great man and cares about people and the country. That is something we need. He understands the debt that we are in and that people need jobs," said Fussell.

Political experts said the debate, which will focus on domestic policy, comes as Romney trails in the polls in a number of key states. He's looking for a breakout performances in the three debates over the next three weeks.

President Obama’s supporters expect him to hold his place in the polls ahead of the Nov. 6 general election.

There will also be one debate in Kentucky between Vice President Joe Biden and Republican V.P. candidate Paul Ryan.
