MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - An American Cancer Society volunteer is taking a lap around the state in his Mini Cooper to raise money for the organization.

Ruben Greenwood is driving 1000 miles across Alabama, visiting various cities and metropolitan areas raising money.

“I've never had anybody in my family that has been affected by cancer but I've seen the results I what cancer can do to families and individuals and so that's been my inspiration,” Greenwood said

While in Mobile, Greenwood and some friends spent time touring the city and visiting cancer patients and survivors. Greenwood is carrying a banner to collect signatures along his route from those who have been or know someone affected by cancer.

He's started a Facebook page for his trip , which started in Birmingham on Sunday and he is headed to Tuscaloosa next. Greenwood plans to end his trip on august 11 but, on the way, he’s been inspired already.

“I've meet enormously wonderful folks and I've met some cancer survivors and cancer patients and it's inspiring it's inspiring to see these folks,” Greenwood said.

He said he’s had a lot of success so far and people ask about his car, which bears a decal with his mission.

“Then we start talking to them about the car and the cause and they start writing checks and wishing me well and that's great," Greenwood said.
