MOBILE, Alabama (WALA) - A man is hospitalized after a domestic situation turns violent. Police said it happened after an early morning altercation on West Turner Road in Prichard.

Police cars, concerned neighbors and family surround a home on West Turner Road.

"Today we had a shooting that occurred," Chief Jimmie Gardner said.

Prichard police said they responded after getting a call shortly after 9:00 Friday morning for a domestic situation that got dangerous.

"A 47-year-old woman and a 48-year-old male. The male was shot once in his torso and a couple of stab wounds to the back," Gardner added.

Gardner said the man who was shot is Douglas Simpson.

"He was alert at the time we arrived and transported to USA Medical Center and don't really know the full extent of the injuries that he received," said Gardner.

Police said Simpson and the woman were in a relationship. Police are still investigating what led up to the stabbing and shooting. But, Gardner said domestic violence is on the rise and needs to be addressed before it gets to this point.

"Growing at an alarming rat. Almost everyday we now see these sorts of things occur through the community. There are things in place to deal with domestic violence. I think we're just going to have to be much more proactive in awareness and education when it relates to domestic violence," Gardner said.

So far, the homeowner has not been charged. Police said Simpson does have a past criminal history ranging from domestic violence to possession of narcotics.
