MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - BayFest organizers said they want to keep the City of Mobile as a partner of the musical festival, and Tuesday, festival organizers shared results from a three year study on its economic impact on Mobile with city officials.
But at least one city council member said the musical festival annual event needs to start looking for more private sponsors.
A new study shows the total economic impact for the City of Mobile from BayFest exceeds $38 million.
The event brings in well known musical acts for three days of live entertainment on the streets of downtown Mobile.
BayFest CEO Bobby Bostwick said the event could not go on without the help from the city.
"The majority of cash flow comes from people who attend the festival, and that is important. I think if you go, you should have to pay for it. I don't think the city or the county should have to pay for the event this large," said Bostwick. "But I do think it is important their investment, whatever it is, will give a good return."
Bostwick said when the event first started the total budget was $400,000. , Bostwick said one act can cost that much now.
Bostwick hopes the city will agree to contribute to the event and continue its partnership.
Council member Bess Rich said it is a great event, but you have to prioritize when it comes to spending tax dollars.
Rich wants to know how much the city contributes when it comes to workers and overtime.
"I am talking about police, fire and sanitation for the cleanup. I would like to know what that contribution is and that is on top of the cash done through the contract," said Rich.
A contract that cost the city $243,000 last year.
The economic impact study showed the music festival generated more than $660,000 in sales tax.
Take that additional $100,000 in kind and our return is two times our investment. To me, that it is a no brainer," said Council member William Carroll.
Council member Rich said it is important for BayFest to look for others sponsors besides the City of Mobile to partner with.
BayFest this year will be held October 5, 6 and 7.
