MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - Roman Catholics in Mobile are hosting a special "Blue Mass" for police, firefighters and other first responders in southwest Alabama.

The annual service will held at lunchtime (12:10 p.m.) Friday at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral in downtown Mobile.

The event is held each year around the anniversary of the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. It's meant to express appreciation for people who service in public safety positions.

Mobile County Sheriff Sam Cochran and FBI Special Agent in Charge Steven Richardson will attend the mass. Also in attendance will be first responders from Baldwin County, Mobile County, State Police, the Mobile County Sheriff's Office, Port Authority, ATF, FBI and Homeland Security.

The first responders will be joined by students from seven elementary and high schools.

The public is also invited to attend.
