MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Alabama State Troopers said they got a surprise when they pulled up to a car accident on Moffett Road; a decomposed body. Now the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.

Sgt. Joe Mahonney with the sheriff’s office said state troopers found the body in the woods near Glenwood and Moffett Road.

"A body which had been off the roadside in a ditch and it appears it has been there for an extended period of time,” said Mahonney.

The body is not related to Friday’s accident.

Deputies believe it has been there for months.

JJ Harris lives around the corner and says the body has been the talk of the neighborhood.

"News goes through the neighborhood, it goes like that,” said Harris.

She is shocked the body wasn’t found sooner.

"We were just over there yesterday picking up cans and then we were down there yesterday again shooting guns the kids got for Christmas,” said Harris.

There's also a lot of fear in the neighborhood but the sheriff's office said it doesn’t look like any foul play is involved.

Instead, they believe it’s the body of a vagrant.

"It almost like it was a little campsite for him. Had a bicycle, there were several food items, jackets and things of that nature. It looks like he had just been camping there,” said Mahoney.

That doesn’t help Holly Lee sleep at night.

"It scares me. I’m the person who has nightmares about stuff like that," said Lee.

The sheriff’s office has a tentative I.D. on the body, but is waiting to release the name pending the notification of family.
