WILMER, Ala. (WALA) - An accident investigation led to a drug bust in Mobile County Thursday. James Trent Gates was arrested at his home in Wilmer, and deputies say he was found holding a one shot meth lab.

The incident began as Alabama State Troopers worked an accident without injuries on Lott Road at the ten mile marker. Troopers say the driver, James Trent Gates, fled the scene.

Troopers then contacted the Mobile County Sheriff's Office to help them locate Gates. He is a known meth user/manufacturer by law enforcement.

Deputies went to Gates home in the 8700 block of Country View E. in Wilmer. They said the car involved in the accident was parked in the driveway.

A man opened the door when deputies knocked. Deputies then spotted Gates passed out on the couch and holding a large plastic bottle. They believed the bottle to be a one shot meth lab. MCSO Narcotics confirmed it to be meth.

Deputies arrested Gates for use/possession drug paraphernalia trafficking meth and manufacture controlled substance 1st degree.
