MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - The Mary G. Montgomery High School teacher who allegedly had a sexual relationship with a student turned herself in to authorities.
Alicia Gray, 28, surrendered at Mobile County Metro Jail just after 3:30 p.m., Monday, February 25.
The move comes one week after allegations surfaced that Gray, a math teacher at MGM, was having a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old freshman.
Gray is charged with two counts of sodomy, second-degree sex abuse and ‘school employee having sexual relations with a student under the age of 19.’
Gray’s husband and her attorney Christine Hernandez were both present when Gray surrendered.
Gray bonded out of jail two hours later.
According to a staff bio that has since been removed from MGM’s website, Gray is on her sixth year teaching at the high school.
Some former students said they were shocked by the allegations.
“She's really cool,” said former student Matt Boykin. “I had her class when I was in ninth grade. I struggled with math a lot, and she really helped me.”
Gray’s staff bio also said she graduated from Mary G Montgomery High school and went on to pursue a bachelor degree in mathematics education from the University of Mobile in May 2007.
She then received her master’s degree in teaching and learning from Nova Southeastern University in May 2011.
Gray has been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation.
It is unclear what evidence deputies have on the case, however, officials said it was enough to press charges.
Gray is expected in court in early March.
