Mobile County Public School Superintendent Martha Peek is gearing up to meet with parents of students at Murphy High School and Clark Shaw Magnet school. The meetings will be to discuss plans to temporarily merge the two schools while Murphy is renovated due to damage from the Christmas Day Tornado.
Peek stopped in the Fox10 News Studio Wednesday morning to discuss Murphy's transition to the new campus and the informational meetings set up for parents. The Murphy parent meeting will be held Wednesday at 7pm at the Mobile Civic Center Theater. A similar meeting will be held for Clark Shaw parents Thursday at 6pm at the Clark Shaw gymnasium.
Preparations have been ongoing since Christmas Day when a tornado ripped through midtown Mobile, leaving behind millions of dollars in damage at Murphy High School.
Portables are being installed at Clark Shaw Magnet School as temporary classrooms for the 2300 displaced Murphy students.
"We will move all the classes at Murphy to these units we will start moving Wednesday morning starting with the seniors," said Facilities Coordinator for the Mobile County School System Huey Belaire.
Superintendent Peek says the students will be totally separate on the Clark Shaw campus. "The middle school students will be in one area and the high school students in another."
Since both schools are starting class two days later than the rest of Mobile County, the Alabama State School Superintendent has forgiven the two days so that the students will not have to make them up.
Peek says students will be brought in one grade level at a time. All of the details will be announced at the two parent meetings being held Wednesday and Thursday night.
