Mobile County Animal Shelter to hold adoption event

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - The Mobile County Animal Shelter is hosting an adoption event Saturday, March 16. It will be from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Shelter. The shelter is located at 7665 Howells Ferry Road.

It's the latest adoption event since the shelter was criticized for euthanizing 49 dogs due to a distemper outbreak in January.

Mobile County Spokesperson Nancy Johnson said since the distemper outbreak, the shelter now gives distemper vaccination shots to every dog that checks into the shelter, not just the adoptable ones.

"So for example, if they look very sick, and then of course we can't adopt out sick animals. We would wait to see if they recovered some and might become adoptable before we give them a distemper shot,” said Johnson.

We also learned the advisory committee, created by the Mobile County Commission met for the first time Thursday. They will look over concerns from the community and plan to offer  recommendations soon.

The shelter is hoping for a big turn-out for the adoption event Saturday. They said hope some of their older animals, that are harder to adopt out, will find a happy home.

The event will include an animal CPR demonstration by the shelter’s licensed veterinarian technician. There will also be games for kids, a rabies clinic, and discounts on adoption fees.

Also on hand for the day will be 10 to 15 honor roll students from Citronelle High School who have opted to donate animal gifts as well as service time to the county shelter. They will be arriving with all kinds of goodies, including treats and toys, leashes, animal shampoo and more. During their visit, they help out at the shelter with the animals and the kennels.
