Officers death spurs investigation

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Since the death of Officer Steven Green many have questioned The Mobile Police Department's polices and procedures.

Authorities said they followed protocol from arrest to metro jail; but circumstances surrounding the case, including the fact that Wallace had a handcuff key and a small knife, have investigators taking a second look.

"We are doing a two pronged investigation. We are doing a criminal side and an administrative side. So our Internal Affairs is looking at policy and procedure. The homicide unit is looking at the criminal side," said Mobile Police Department Chief Micheal T. Williams.

Williams said the investigation could include how officers escort a prisoner from the sally port to the jail and if the procedure for searching a suspect at the time of arrest is still working.

"Certainly, from our perspective, we want to make sure we thoroughly search everyone we come into contact with," Williams said.

Williams said after an administrative investigation is completed, change in policy may be in order.

"We will go back and look at the results of the internal investigation, and they will highlight those things that we may need to go back and look at," Williams said.

FOX10 will follow up with The Mobile Police Department when the internal investigation results come in.
