MOBILE, Alabama (WALA) - The Mobile Police Department has a new boat to patrol the waters with. A 26 foot custom designed, locally built boat was delivered to the department this week.

The new vessel purchased through the 2007 Port Security Grant Program offered by FEMA. Silver ships, which is local, built the ridged hull aluminum boat.

It is equipped with police lights, siren, radar, chart plotter and depth sounder. The patrol boat will be used for ship escorts, dive operations, maritime law enforcement, and search and rescue operations.

The grant allowed the department to install a boat lift allowing for quicker response time and lower operating costs. Other equipment purchased with the grant will allow three patrol boats to be in service.

Currently, the Mobile Police Department has more port security resources than any other agency in Alabama.
