Mobile's teen curfew extended through 2014

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Mobile's teen curfew will be in place for much longer than first thought.

City council members unanimously voted Tuesday, November 6 to extend the curfew for two more years. It will now expire on December 31, 2014. The original sunset date was December 31, 2012.

Under the ordinance, anyone 17-years-old and younger cannot be out past 11:00 p.m. Sunday through Thursday. On Friday and Saturday, the curfew is midnight.

There's a separate curfew for the downtown area. It's from 10:00 p.m. to 5 a.m. every day. The city's daytime curfew is Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. when public schools are in session.

Mobile Police Chief Micheal T. Williams asked for the extension saying it is working well to bring down the crime rate. As of October 30, Mobile police have detained 516 juveniles. One-hundred forty-three of these juveniles were detained during school hours while another 373 were detained during non-school, or night time hours.
