MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - While numerous crews diligently work to get the Carnival Cruise Ship Triumph safe to port, one mother is feeling a little relief. When we first spoke with Mary Poret on Wednesday, she said her she spoke to her daughter for the first time since Monday. On Thursday, that changed.
Poret said she knew her daughter was ok, but there's something about seeing the proof for yourself.
CNN Reporter: "Wearing the pink shirt? Is this Mary, Rebekah's mom on the phone?"
Mary: "Yes, this is Rebekah's mom."
CNN Reporter: "You must be beyond elated to be able to see your daughter for the first time?"
Mary: "I'm very excited."
Poret was able to see her daughter from the top deck waiving at the camera. Rebekah, 12, was able to call her mom at the beginning of this nightmare.
"She was hysterical, crying, ‘Mommy, I am scared. Mommy, I don't know what to do. Mommy, I am afraid I won't ever get to see you again,’” Poret said.
The conversations have gotten better, though, as the days have passed.
Mary: "How are you doing?"
Rebekah: "I'm good. I'm cold, but I'm good."
Mary: "Okay, I promise you when I pick you up from that ship, I'm gonna have a nice, warm, snugly blanket for you, okay?"
Rebekah: "Good."
Mary: "I love you."
Rebekah: "Have some McDonald's there too."
Mary: "Ma'am?'
Rebekah: "I said have some McDonalds there too. We're hungry."
Mary: "Oh, I bet you are hungry, baby. You want McDonald's?"
Rebekah: "I want something; human food."
Rebekah told her mother that she had eaten an onion sandwich. Rebekah is on the ship with her father and another father and daughter who are family friends. As you can imagine, the two moms at home are eagerly awaiting their arrival.
